Hi

I bought a Mini Marcos just over a year ago (chassis 8074) and it has been tucked away waiting for space  and time to start rebuilding it. What I purchased was a shell with all glass, new front and rear subframes and most of the suspension components. It was sold as never having been registered even though there are signs that the shell has at some point been built up into a car.

I will start the rebuild shortly and need to start acquiring parts that I am missing. Obviously an engine/gearbox is high on the list. My question is if I am looking to register the car when complete with the DVLA do I need to ensure the engine I install is of the same era as the body ie 1972 or could I go for any A/A+ series engine. I read the article in the magazine last year on registering a car but it wasn't clear if this was the case.

Is there anything else I need to be aware of to ensure I don't hit problems when I come to try and register it?

Any tips or experience would be very welcome.

Thanks
Mike

As far as I know the car will need an IVA before registering so I would recommend you download the manual and read it cover to cover before you go any further. It is possible to get a mini Marcos through an IVA there's at least two that have and one in the process. The one in process have had emissions issues due to the age of the engine and has now bought an older engine to fit. I believe there may be a 10 year exemption on the IVA but I think it's aimed at cars that have been on the road but incorrectly registered so may or may not work in your case.

It is possible to obtain an age related plate without going through an IVA.

I did it on my MkIV (Chassis 8071).  I wrote an article for the club magazine a few issues back on how to go about it.

Surely this only applies to incorrectly registered cars. If it's never been registered it would need IVA otherwise what's to stop you buying an old but unregistered shell and a mini then claiming it's the same car.

My shell had never been registsred.

Neither had Goffs Mini Jem, and he also got an age related plate about 6 months before me.

Hi Craig

I read your article in the magazine which was very helpful. I need to source an engine for the car and  question is do I need to get source an early A series in line with the age of the body or could I source any A / A+ engine for the build. I am trying to avoid any problems when it comes to trying to register it?

Many thanks
