I'm at the stage of sorting out which brakes and wheels to use on my barn-find Mini Jem. Can anyone tell me if the newer type of master cylinder with the combined servo will fit in the engine compartment? Will it simply bolt-on and will the pedals fit too? Is there any difference in braking performance between Cooper "S" 7.5" discs and the newer 8.4" discs.? I had intended to use "S" discs with 10" wheels, but someone has told me that 12" wheels with low profile tyres and the 8.4 discs will fit without wheelarch modifications and would give better braking. If I use 10" wheels, which width is best for road use? Any help would be most appreciated before I spend more money on the wrong things! |

Jeremy, please DON'T SHOUT! Your posts will be easier to read if you type in lower case.
First decide what size wheels you want to have on your car, then get the appropriate brakes. I use 10" wheels but that's a matter of personal preference (and what came with the kit).
If you have 10" wheels then Cooper 'S' brakes are adequate. If you really want to go mad you can fit 4-pot callipers. The remote servo will fit inside the engine compartment, on the inner wing. If you use an integral servo and master cylinder you will need a bulge in the bonnet. Make sure you fit small diameter (850 Mini or Cooper S) slaves on the back. I think the best rim width for road use is 5" with 165/70 x 10 tyres e.g. Yoko A008s. A032Rs are good for grip but wear out quickly.
If you use 12" wheels then vented Metro discs are best, otherwise use standard 8.4" discs. I can't comment on rims and tyres for 12" wheels. |

Thanks for the information, you have stopped me making an elementary error. sorry about the upper case too, which I have now changed. I have had a lot of work done to the bonnet enlarging the bulge to clear the 45 DCOE linkage and it is ready for painting, so I don't want to alter it anymore. I'll keep to 10" wheels and will fit an "S" master cylinder and "S" discs with a remote servo as you suggest. I found the Yoko AO 32Rs very grippy too on my CooperSport, but they wore out far too quickly. |
