Hello all,
The Mini Jem restoration project I bought is currently sat with my local restoration chap in the warm and dry.
He is going to have a paint chap look at the bodywork and figure out what it will need.
I am going to ask some really dumb questions:
- how do you tell if the gelcoat needs repairing/completely redoing? The body work on mine I thought looked reasonable and couldnt see that it needed full gel coat but the guy that transported the car grumbled that he thought it did....If it needs completely redoing how much would that + paint typically cost? More than £5k?
- where should you look to inspect any potential horrors lurking below the fibreglass - is there any way of doing this without causing major damage in the process i.e. can you inspect the cross members etc in a particular place such that only limited repairs will need to be done if it looks ok?
- any other tips for someone starting off?

Thanks!

The answer to question 1 is ... look at it. If the gelcoat surface is sound then you almost certainly don't need to strip and replace it. Any existing paint should be stripped or sanded off (use a GRP-friendly stripper). Any cracks must be ground out down to the matting and filled with gelcoat filler. Bad areas of crazing need to be removed and repaired with tissue. If there's damage you may need to laminate some more fibreglass on the inside to strengthen the panel.
As for potential horrors - anywhere where there is embedded steel. If the fibreglass is swelling or delaminating then its's a pretty good indication that there is a problem. You might also see rust stains. Elsewhere either leave the steel covered up or if you're worried drill a hole and see what you go into. If it's bright metal then seal it up again. If rust flakes fall out investigate.
The steel inserts are where the subframes and shock absorbers bolt on (including the rear wheel arches) and the tube that goes across the floor in front of the seats then up over the door openings.
Buy John Dickens's book on fibreglass if you haven't already got it. It's available through Complete Kitcar.

Thanks. From my inpsection of it I couldnt see any major issues and the chap that has the car agreed - but he is going to get an expert to take a look at some point. It is difficult to figure out what the grey is, it may have been primed at some point and then that rubbed back. |

Had someone look at the car now. They reckon £4-5k for bodywork and paint. First step is to start some investigative work on the embedded steel sections. |

Well, after a long time on hold its time to start this project off again....so having confirmed that the steel sections are fine, its time to start stripping it down and readying the shell for paint. Much as I would have liked to take this on myself the car is with a one man restoration shop who has done work on my Fulvias before.
Colour choice - maybe snowberry white with a black stripe. |

Sadly I fear this restoration may never happen for usual dull reasons so I am willing to consider offers - please email me at jonpstevenson@aol.com if interested. Its complete, SORNd and properly registered as a Jem with DVLA. Currently in storage at restoration garage. |

Sorry to hear that. We may be interested if the price is right. Space is a premium for us at the moment due to 6 ongoing projects. PM me with your price. Thanks |

Hi all, sadly I have to sell this Jem. It will be on ebay soon with reserve set at £2000 ish. As a reminder, its complete, on SORN (registered as a Mark 2 Jem) but requires full restoration. |
