Hello everyone,
Some of you that have been in the club along time might remember me! I used to have a MKIII (bodyshell 7464, AXG295K) back in the early 90's, but circumstance meant that I couldn't keep it and it was sold to to a member in the Netherlands.
Fast forward a few years and I have recently agreed to buy a MKIV from a club member near Chorley. I only know that it is a W reg, registered as a Marcos and in need of full restoration. I've not even seen the car, but for the price I was offered it I just couldn't say no
So once I get it back here to Shrewsbury the fun and games will begin. I haven't touched a Mini or a derivative since I sold my MKIII, so am well out of touch with price / availability of parts, and I reckon I have forgotten alot more than I remember about what parts are interchangable between Mini / Metro as well as all the other rusty things that the BL group produced.
Initially I will have to work on it in my drive / garden as my garage isn't big enough for it. So if any members know of a garage, or a space that I can rent within an hour of Shrewsbury PLEASE PLEASE let me know!
No doubt I'll be asking a thousand questions that have all been asked before, so please bear with me.
All that said, it feels great to be back
All the best
Craig
ps Thanks to Roger for putting me in touch with the seller |

Can't really work on that in the kitchen, and I suppose using the dishwasher and then the oven is out of the question... |

Hello All,
Just a quick update, I collected the car today. It needs a lot of work, but no more than I was expecting, and has a few nice bits on it, such as a remote servo.
I think it is chassis DH 8399, but it is difficult to tell as the 3 seems to have been overstamped at some point (I should have checked the V5 before I posted it!). The reg is RWR839W.
Does anybody know anything of the history of this car, it was first registered on 06/11/1980.
I'll post some photographs up asap.
Regards
Craig |

I've got it down as 8399. I know of two previous owners both up in Lancashire. |

Not one of those Romanian jobbies! I didn't know anyone was preserving one. What's the stock behind it in IC livery? It looks like one of the old Gatwick Express sets.

9/10 for guessing the loco, but this one is Doncaster built. 56001 - 030 were built in Romania by Electroputere, 56031 - 115 built at BREL Doncaster and 56116 - 135 being built at BREL Crewe.
Our loco is one of 3 that are preserved, the others being 56098 and 56040.
There were a couple of others but they have been sold on for further use back on the main line.
10/10 for the coaches, it is indeed a GatEx rake that was sidelined with the arrival of new units a few years back..
For anyone interested the loco is powered by a Ruston 16RK3CT. Thats a V16 comprising 2x Intercoolers and 2x Napier turbos. 10" bore, 12" stroke. It produces 3250 HP @ 900rpm (and it does...we've loadbanked it!) and it is coupled to a 2000KVA Altenator. Oh and the power unit / altenator weigh in at nearly 40 tonnes

Ruston RK3 eh.... I worked on them in the factory....still do! Rustons became part of the MAN group and I used to go around the world working on them/mirrless/paxman and various other engines including the Danish B&W 2 strokes which produce 23,000 HP in 6 cylinder in line form!!. Currently working in northern queensland Australia on MAN 32/40 engines - in line 9 cylinders. makes working on tiny mini/a-series seem like childs play! |

hi craig, the 1800 is always garaged.......the money they are going for - if you can find one!- you don't want to lose one!. I think your car sat for a while as it was covered with a tarp for a couple of years and it was only on a windy day when it blew off that Uncle Al saw it was a mini marcos and told me about it. Uncle Al is the one who got me bitten by the marcos bug as I took my first ride in the 1800 at aged 7.....I'm now approaching 33!!. he even helped convince my father that a MM would be a good first car for a 17 year old....I still own the same car today BNE 277B (prev reg 648 MOL) |

Hey Craig!
You got one then?
Bet you're amazed at how stiff the mk4 body is compared to the mk3?
Pity about the GTM - but it quickly went on to a new home.
I recognise the RWR on your no. plate - maybe an old pic i've got somewhere....
I'm still in the middle of 4age-ing the GTM - and learning Megasquirt:? |
