I don't have much experience working with fibreglass, and don't think we have any boat builders or the like near me for supplies. What sort of materials will I be needing to get hold of to do repairs to a Marcos body?
It the stuff used for roofing nowadays the same thing?

Feel free to contact me for help and advice. I buy my supply's from east coast fibreglass, for the majority of repairs you'll need polyester resin and chop strand mat (CSM) personally I use 450g CSM but you can get it in 300g or 600g most of the cars are made from 2 layers of 600 with more in key areas. Surface tissue is useful for crack repairs but you can use CSM. Personally I don't bother with gelcoat (except for moulding new parts) as most cars are painted by now and car body filler (P38 etc) is polyester based so sticks well.

Thanks... actually there is a bunch of east coast fibreglass in south shields, about 100 mile round trip, so not to bad... I thought the shell's would have been more than 2 layers.. doesn't seem much! |

All the mounting points have quite a bit more and there's steel (unfortunately normally needs replacing) in all those areas.
There's also a fair bit of overlap in areas but the main part of each panel isn't very thick at. The cars did get a bit heavier through the marks so by MK4 it may be 3x 600g it's difficult to tell for certain, it also seems to vary from car to car a little.

| Reading the ECF website.. they offer a coarse on fibreglassing for £20 refundable on your order, might beneficial to get the basics |

CSM is 2-2.5 to 1 the weight of mat so 1 square metre of 600g CSM will take 1.8 kg of resin but if you use 3 layers it'll be 3.6 kg.
Woven, twill, bi axial etc is 1 to 1 so 1 square metre of 600g will take 600g of resin but 3 layers will take near on 1.2kg.
