Some seven years after seeing my first MM (A rather sorry looking shell in a garage in Northampton) and instantly wanting one - that was a project too far as someone who was just about to leave university and had no job! - I've finally acquired my own. DH8313 has a new home, which at the moment is Dad's garage as he'll be working on it to get it running again.

It's been in a shed for the last 20 years, first priority is getting the engine going, then work on the brakes, clutch and rear subframe. Bonnet has some small areas that need repairing, but the rest of the body is fine apart from odd scratches and chips. Hope to have it up and going reasonably soon, it will be my main car once it's running and can't wait!

D&H Mk IV 8313, KGV 215V (aka George) - 75,000 miles and counting since restoration in 2011.

Not sold on the forum, merely used the forum as a means of the buyer getting in touch with those selling the car...

Exactly, but I think you're splitting hairs! It was an announcement rather than an advertisement so it was OK.

Good luck with the project.

Thanks for all the good wishes, start tackling the engine tomorrow - fingers crossed that won't cost too much to get going!

Well the engine's fired up already, the solenoid needs changing and a few other adjustments but it's a good sign. Spent an afternoon scrubbing rust and mud from under th wheel arch while Dad worked on getting the clutch apart.

Started stripping out the front brakes today, offside is done, hope to tackle the nearside on Monday. Meanwhile Dad has been trying to free up the flywheel, hot air gun and prybar don't seem to have much effect!

Have you tried starting it in gear then blipping the throttle with the clutch pedal down? Even more brutal is to start in 1st then drive around with your foot on the clutch till it frees... Better do the brakes first!

It'll free up soon, I don't think I'd dare drive it at the moment, certainly until there's some kind of braking on the car...

Thinking ahead somewhat, to the bodywork. There are a few scratches and stone chips in the gelcoat, and the bonnet has some cracks that will need to be repaired and then the panel resprayed. In terms of the finish, I can only think of three options:

1. Polish out the scratches as much as possible and live with the worse chips & dings
2. Use some of the paint from the bonnet respray to touch up the problem areas
3. Full respray

I'm not sure how (1) would look, and the paint match for (2) would have to be near-on perfect. The question is - how much would a respray cost? As it'll be the same colour, there won't be a need to strip it down and paint the whole thing - just an "over the top" job.

Option 1 is the choice I would take. It won't go rusty, and the dings and scrapes are part of the character. When it's really bad, do a full, bare shell, ground out the cracks and re-glassfibe, respray.
Option 2 just gives you more paint to strip off later.
Option 3 will give you even more paint to take off at a later date. If you don't grind out all the cracks and repair them with tissue or mat, after a couple of weeks you'll have a shiny car with loads of cracks!

Good answer - if you see the state of the paintwork on my current car (N-plate VW Polo) which has gradually faded from red to pink...I'll certainly be taking more care of the Marcos!

Trying to find replacement wheel nuts and centre caps for the 10" Compomotives, the nuts are a real motley selection (would like some locking nuts if possible) and a couple of the caps are missing. Anyone know where I can find some? Looked on minispares and they have a variety of nuts - not sure which ones I need - and have caps for everything but Compomotives!
