“GBH 771G started life as the Fellpoint MK2 demonstrator and it appeared in various magazines like September 1969 Hot Car, and March 1971 Car & Car Conversions. “It still has most of its original features mentioned at the time, the new ventilation system, hydrolastic suspension, Escort MK1 rear lights. Unfortunately the 1275 S engine and Dellorto down draught carbs are long gone and was replaced with an 1098 MG unit. “Press photos in period show it with Cosmic alloy and later Mambas it now sits on a set of banded steel wheels. We rescued it from its 45 year hibernation in a dry garage in Camberley, its owner Paul Murphy said it had been his wedding present from his wife. Unfortunately work, kids etc had stalled his grand plans. “Purchased locally from someone in Mytchett. Rumour has it it was previously owned by the legendary Peter Filby. Now in the care of Trevor Newman & John Valentine. Plan is to embrace the Baked Beans history and sympathetically restore it to resemble the press car. “It’s rather brownish orange colour that earned it the nickname Bean will be replaced with a contemporary coat of something like BL Blaze but with a satin black painted Kamm tail. And maybe a set of headlight covers. If someone has a set of suitable Mambas or Cosmic they’d like to donate. Or any letters for the front grille number plate. Watch this space.” |
